Holidays and stay in spring 2025 in Riquewihr and Alsace: Easter & spring events, hikes & gourmet walks, wine festivals…
Long live spring 2025 in Alsace, around Riquewihr!
Long live spring! The music and noises made by the Carnival succeed every year in driving away the cold minds of winter! With a variable date from one year to the next, Easter is the Spring festival par excellence. This year, Easter is April 20, 2025. In Alsace, the season corresponds to the appearance of a very nice mythical character: the Easter hare…
For this spring page, I have selected for you some nice events around Riquewihr, Colmar and Sélestat.
Important note: unlike Christmas markets which, from the end of November to Christmas attract crowds of visitors from all over the world, the events I indicate here are less known to tourists and more frequented by locals. If you want to meet the inhabitants of the region, a spring stay is a good way to do so.
Easter and its traditions in Alsace
Easter is always a Sunday but the date changes every year! In 2025, Easter will be on April 20, 2025 and in 2026, on Sunday, April 5.
👉 I have prepared a special page for you on Easter and its traditions in Alsace.
We present the mysterious but happy “Easter Hare” which appears in many forms but mainly in chocolate. All gourmets love to bite it starting with its long ears. Long before the Middle Ages there was a tradition in Alsace of an Easter hare who brought decorated eggs…
There is also the Lamele (small lamb in Alsatian), a delicious biscuit rich in eggs, sprinkled with icing sugar and traditionally decorated with a tissue paper banner.
Easter markets in Colmar and Alsace
This year, the Colmar Easter market takes place from April 4 to April 27, 2025.
For a dozen years, Colmar has celebrated Easter and Spring with a friendly market that is held for 3 weeks.
The Colmar Spring Market is smaller than its elder, the very famous Christmas market. But you will be delighted to stroll from cottage to chalet, around the Dominican Church and the Koïfhus (the Place de l’Ancienne Douane).

It’s spring in Alsace, nature is reliving!
Spring this year in Alsace comes March 20, 2025! But yes, like every year at the same time. Sometimes he is even a little early 😉. Nature and good humor are reborn. It is one of the most beautiful seasons for a stay in Riquewihr and Alsace.
IN RIQUEWIHR, NATURE AND THE VINEYARD AWAKEN…
Depending on hiking or cycling, you will see nature, the forest and the vineyards reborn. The first leaves are waiting for the signal of the flowering almond trees. There are some almond trees on the heights of Riquewihr. They are plenty more 2 kilometers away, on the Mandelberg hill (mander hill), between Beblenheim and Mittelwihr. Their beautiful pink bloom marks the end of winter.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN RIQUEWIHR AND ALSACE IN THE SPRING?
With climate change, it becomes difficult to make predictions. Wouldn’t it be reasonable to stop subjecting our mood and joy of life to the weather? 😇
Alsace is beautiful in all seasons. Whatever the time of year, the region has treasures to deliver. Everything will depend on the traveler’s interests and constraints. Some will be disturbed if the sun is not shining. Others will be distrained if it rains. It must not be too cold. Not too hot…
It is true, however, that spring in Alsace is generally a very pleasant season, with rather mild temperatures.
Enjoy the spring of 2025 with a stay in one of our charming cottages at the Rumparts de Riquewihr or in the garden village of La Vancelle!
In spring, the young foliage dresses the forest and the mountain with 50 shades of soft green…
More than ever, it’s time to go back on the trails for beautiful hikes. Riquewihr is in the heart of a beautiful vineyard with many trails. The mountain is also very close.
Whatever your preference, just walk out of one of our vacation rentals and take a few steps to enjoy a beautiful environment.
In Alsace, the Kingdom of Animals is awakening…
In the center of Alsace, just a few kilometers from Riquewihr, several animal parks delight young and old. Closed during the winter, they open their doors again end of March and welcome you until after the All Saints’ Day holidays.
A royal show at the Eagle’s Park (VOLERIE DES AIGLES)
At the Eagle’s Park (Volerie des Aigles), the raptors do the show and it is a breathtaking one for young and old.
More than 50 years ago, the venerable ruin of Kintzheim Castle on the slopes of Haut-Koenigsbourg became the sumptuous theater of the Volerie des Aigles and its feathered boarders. Ladies and gentlemen, what we offer you here is a ballet. An artistic aerial ballet during which the winged stars – these same majestic raptors that you will have approached upon your arrival – will embark on breathtaking high acrobatic numbers under the guidance of their falconers.
There is no other word than “exceptional”!
👉 The Volerie des Aigles opens this year from March 26, 2025 and until November 11, 2025.

AT NATUROPARC, BABY STORKS ARE BORN IN THE SPRING!
At Naturoparc, the stork park in Hunawihr, very close to Riquewihr, you will know everything about the stork, the emblematic bird of Alsace. But you will also see other animals such as otters and raccoons.
Originally, Naturoparc (the new name of the “Parc des Cigognes”) was exclusively a captive breeding site for the white stork. It was in order to safeguard the emblematic stork of Alsace that the Hunawihr Center was born in 1976. It is here that the creators of the Volerie des Aigles de Kintzheim, managed to find a technique to “repopulate” Alsace. And it was a superb success…

Naturoparc is open from March 22, 2025 to November 11, 2025. For details and schedules, visit the Naturoparc website in Hunawihr.
THE MOUNTAIN OF THE MONKEYS
At the Monkey Mountain in Kintzheim, you will approach 200 macaques!
The Monkey Mountain (Montagne des Singes in French) is an animal park located in the municipality of Kintzheim a few kilometers from the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg and very close to the Eagle’s Park (Volerie des Aigles). Here there is no cage, it is you who walk in a 24-hectare forest where you will be nose-to-nose with the monkeys!
The Monkey Mountain welcomes you this year from March 29, 2025.

Spring of Alsace wine, in the vineyard or at the winemaker’s
From May, the “gourmet walks”, aperitifs and picnics at the winemaker’s will be back everywhere. In spring, the summer crowd is not yet there but lovers of wine, gastronomy, hiking and heritage are present and they are delighted!
GOURMETS & Wine lovers, WAKE UP!
Here and there on the wine route, villages celebrate this rebirth to a new life by organizing the first wine festivals of the year.
In Dambach-la-Ville, the Brotherhood of the Blessed Frankstein (Confrérie des Bienheureux du Frankstein) organizes the traditional “Granite Stones & Wines” festival every spring. Wine traditions and folklore are at the rendezvous. Amateurs come from far away for the occasion.
👉 This year, “Pierres & Vins de Granit” is April 27, 2025 (the Sunday after Easter).
In Mittelbergheim, another wine village near Andlau, the winegrowers are organizing an event that they have baptized ” Hinter’m Kallerladen”, which literally means “behind the cellar skyline”. It is an “open cellars” festival where you can make beautiful discoveries.
👉 This year, the Kallerladen will take place on Sunday, April 06, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
It is organized by the “Syndicat viticole” of the village of Mittelbergheim. Contact +336 86 65 24 62 fred@vinhansmann.com
Apart from a few insiders, tourists do not know much about these events. It is mostly Alsatians who benefit from it.
Traditionally, the Ascension weekend – this year May 29, 2025 – is also conducive to “Open Doors” days among winegrowers.

7, 8, 9 juin 2025, une tradition du week-end de la Pentecôte
All over Alsace, the Pentecost weekend (June 7, 8, 9, 2025) has been the time, for several years, for the “picnic at the winemaker”. The winemakers who participate in the operation welcome visitors who come each with their packed lunch. The winemakers offer their wines. Some even put barbecues in place. Attention, the event is very popular. It is absolutely necessary to book.

In the Hautes Vosges, in the land of Munster cheese
Every year in mid-May, the herds of Vosges cows from several farms rise from the valley to the high-altitude pastures. This is a sign that spring has arrived on the heights. Here is some information to live an exceptional day in the mountains.
IN THE LAND OF MUNSTER CHEESE AND “MARCAIRE” MEAL IN A mountain FARM INN.
Since the Middle Ages, peasants and their herds have shaped mountain landscapes. It was they who cleared the forests that covered the Vosges ridges to create the high-altitude pastures that we call “chaumes” here.
The farmer in the Vosges massif who raises dairy cows is traditionally called “marcaire”. Its name comes from the Alsatian “malker”, which means “the one who milks cows”. The marcaire transforms cow’s milk into munster cheese.
In winter, the “marcaire” works in his farm in the valley with his animals that stay warm in the stable. But as soon as the sunny days return, he goes up with his flock to the thatch. Cows love this fragrant altitude grass and the summer munster is even better!
The marcaires spend the whole summer at the marcairie, a small high-altitude farm. Today, these farmers continue to make a magnificent munster cheese (which benefits from the appelation “munster fermier” meaning the cheese is made in the farm, not in an industrial dairy) but, in addition, they have become innkeepers because the marcairies have become farm-inns. Most of the marcaires welcome hikers and visitors around their succulent local specialties! Charcuterie, dairy specialties and smoked meats are among the most traditional dishes.
The marcaire menu, available all over the farm-inns of the Vosges mountains, allows you to enjoy these delicious farm products.

SPRING TRANSHUMANCE TO HIGH-ALTITUDE PASTURES
Every year in mid-May, the herds of Vosges cows from several farms go up from the valley to their high-altitude pastures.
It’s been a few years now that I don’t miss this beautiful day in the mountain above Munster. A day of celebration for the 40 Vosges cows of the Buchwald farm led to the high-altitude pastures by the head cow, the leader of the herd.
Good walkers are invited to accompany the herd to the sound of the clarines towards the heights. Be careful, the rhythm imposed by the cows is sustained. Imagine: they have been confined to the stable for several months. They can’t wait to taste the good high altitude grass. Each cow is dressed for the occasion of a bell (clarine) that resonates through the mountain. You
will leave the village farm in the morning to the sound of the accordion. A break is planned at the Ried inn-farm along the way (folk atmosphere and alps horns). This is where the less good walkers and late walkers meet
🙂
The transhumance ends at the Buchwald farm at an altitude of 1050m around 2 p.m. with a marcaire meal to the sound of the accordion.
WALKING & HIKING IN THE Vosges MOUNTAINS
Bring a detailed map with the marked trails. It is best to have the IGN (French National Geographic Institute) maps on your smartphone (well charged). This will allow you to geolocate yourself. Don’t joke with your security. Of course, the Vosges mountains are not the Alps but every week the Hohrod Gendarmerie Platoon (specialized in mountain rescue) must go to rescue reckless or lost walkers.
Inform your loved ones of your itinerary before leaving. In case of a problem, have the “112” reflex: it allows you to reach help free of charge, 24 hours a day, even from any mobile phone.

“Knepfelfacht”, the spring gastronomic event in Riquewihr
The concept of the Knepfelfacht is based on a dozen pairs of cook / winemaker or brewer. The chef creates a recipe around the Knepfel that he implements in front of the visitors. The winemaker offers one or more wines to accompany the dish.
RIQUEWIHR AND THE QUENELLE FESTIVAL, THE “KNEPFELFACHT”
JUNE 14 & 15, 2025
Every year, in mid-June, Riquewihr pays tribute to one of the most emblematic dishes of Alsace and the Rhine universe: Knepfel (can be translated as “quenelle”). We have known the Knepfle since the Middle Ages. The recipe variations are endless and every year, chefs create new ones! This is an opportunity to be gourmet during this memorable weekend of June 14 and 15, 2025.
The festival takes place in the square in front of the town hall where a dozen tents house as many cooks and winemakers. There is also a cook show during which renowned chefs from the region compete amicably. This is who will produce the most original knepfel recipe. The jury will decide.
During the two days of the event (June 14 & 15, 2025), visitors will be able to stroll from stand to stand, to discover duos of chefs and winemakers who offer knepflas & Alsace wines pairings.
But what are Knepfla or Knepfel?
Knöpfle, or Knepfle, mean “small button” in many language variants of German, including Alsatian. The French word “quenelle” comes from the German Knödel (“dough ball”, from the Latin nodus, “knot”). These terms basically refer to a dish of pasta with eggs that serves as an accompaniment to dishes in sauce. The Spätzele (more known) are a thinner and elongated variant of the Knöpfle, or Knepfle. In the Bas-Rhin, we talk about Knepfle (Knepple in Hunchbacked Alsace). The Haut-Rhin talks about Knepfla. We also hear Knepp or Kneddeln, or Knepple in the country of Bitche, knöpfle or knöpfli in Switzerland.
Flour, water and eggs form the base to make a more or less liquid dough. Depending on the chef’s or grandmother’s recipe, other ingredients and seasonings are added. The dough, formed into balls (but here too the shape is variable) is cooked in water. As I have already written above, Knepfle are mainly used as an accompaniment to dishes in sauce that enhance them in an elegant way to produce a dish very popular in Central Europe. But Knepfla can also be served as a main course with a sauce or grated cheese, or vegetables.
The variety of possible recipes means that at the Knepfelfacht of Riquewihr, you will only eat different dishes. And unexpected!
The “Knepfle”: a centuries-old dish…
The book of the monk Bernardin Buchinger is 297 pages long! Very dense, it looks more like a reminder than a very precise description of recipes. But a real cook should be able to reconstruct the recipes… Here are some that concern the Knepfle. It is translated from Old German. The numbers are those of the original edition (1671). You will see that delicate spices and flavors are very present.
While waiting to be able to implement these very old recipes that are part of the Rhenish culinary heritage yourself, come and taste the Knepfle recipes that are offered to you in Riquewihr at Knepfelfacht!
